How A First Four Bet Could Win You Thousands

Have you ever placed a ‘first four’ bet?

There are dozens of different types of bets available to punters. These range from simple ‘win’ and ‘place’ bets to complicated accumulators which can confuse even the most experienced punter.

If you are looking for a healthy profit on a single race, a ‘first four’ bet might be for you.

First Four

A First Four bet requires you to select the first four finishers in a given horse race. It is similar to a ‘quinella’ and a ‘trifecta’ – bets which require you to pick the first two or three finishers in a given event.

You can place a First Four bet on any nominated race covered by the national TABs including thoroughbreds, greyhounds and harness.
There are several different types of First Four bet available.

Straight First Four Bet

A straight First Four bet requires you to pick the first four finishers of a particular race in the correct order. This is the easiest way for you to maximise your profit as it requires just one stake. A win is paid only in the event of your nominated four runners finishing in the correct order.

Box First Four Bet

A box First Four bet requires you to pick the first four finishers in a nominated race in any order. You make four selections and if they occupy the first four places, in any order, you will win.

There are 24 permutations for your four horses to finish in the first four places and so a box First Four is made up of twenty-four bets. A $1 stake would therefore result in a $24 outlay for this particular bet.

Standout First Four Bet

A standout First Four bet is a good value option if you have a very clear idea of which horse will win a particular race. You select one runner which you believe will win the race, and then three further runners who you believe will finish in second, third and fourth places. If your chosen first place runner wins the race, the other three runners can finish in the next three places in any order.
A standout First Four bet reduces the number of combinations. In the example above there would be six possible permutations and so six bets. This type of bet is sometimes called a ‘roving banker’ bet.

Flexi First Four Bet

A flexi bet allows you to decide how much you wish to spend on their bet. For example, a box First Four bet with four runners costs $24 to receive 100% of the final dividend. If you only wished to stake $12 then a flexi bet allows you to do this and you will win 50% of the dividend.
Whilst there might be a degree of difficulty in picking the first four finishers in a given race, the various box and standout First Four options give you a good choice of options when trying to profit from picking the first four finishers.

About Betfair

Who are Betfair?

Betfair – the leading sports betting exchange – has revolutionised the betting industry. The company has over a million customers worldwide and, unlike traditional bookmakers, the odds for all sporting events are set by Betfair users.
You can also choose to ‘lay’ a horse or team as well as backing your chosen selection.
Betfair offers some of the best odds available for racing and sporting events and, odds are up to 20% better than the Australian TAB.

Top Five Benefits:

    • Choose whether to back your selection or whether to ‘lay’ it on any sports event
    • Racing Zone provides Betfair back and lay odds alongside NSW TAB, SuperTab and Unitab markets which is useful for comparing comparative prices
    • On average, odds are 20% better than those offered by the Australian TAB
    • Trade your bets so you profit no matter which of your bets wins
    • Quick bet settlement

Betting with Betfair

Some of the more popular betting types at Betfair:

    • BSP Price – A fixed price taken at the time of placing your bet
    • Places – back or lay a horse to be placed in a certain race
    • Back and lay - Betfair allows you to back your selection to win in the normal manner or you can do the opposite and lay your selection to lose. As you can either back or lay a selection you benefit from the additional option of being able to trade your position and lay your bet back if it looks the likely winner, to guarantee yourself a profit
    • In-running – you can place bets during horse races, right up until the final seconds

How Track Bias Affects Races

It is a fact that horses run differently on different tracks. There are 330 racetracks in Australia and all will tend to show favouritism to certain post positions and certain types of horses. Some call the advantage of certain post positions ‘lane bias’ and some call a horse’s predisposition to certain tracks ‘speed bias’. Combined, they are known as ‘track bias’.

What is track bias?

‘Track bias’ is a term most generally used to describe how one part of a racetrack may be different from another. It can include a wide variety of conditions including the severity of turns, the type of racing surface, where the starting gate is located, any cambers in the track surface, the length of the straight, the angles of the surface from a true flat position and the hardness of the ground.

Track bias is not a phenomenon that is unique to Australia or to particular tracks, but is a widely discussed issue in horse racing the world over.

What causes track bias?

There are three major influencing factors which can cause track bias:
    • The weather conditions
    • The usage of the course
    • The design of the track

Course design

You may think most courses are broadly the same. However, this is not the case and there are many factors in the design and layout of a course that can advantage or disadvantage certain horses. The main factors are:

    • Location of starting gate – starting barriers near to a turn favour the horses drawn on the inside

    • Type of surface – this can make a huge difference to how a horse runs. Even different types of grass can have an impact
    • Small, tight turns – typically favours ‘front running’ horses
    • Length of straight - a long straight changes from an on-pace bias to an off-pace bias

Weather conditions

Weather conditions will certainly influence the performance of a track.

For example, a wet track will often favour off-pace horses whilst a dry track can be an advantage to on-pace horses. In addition, when a grass track dries out quickly after rain, it will often favour leaders or on-pace runners.

Course usage

The number of races in Australia has increased significantly in the last two or three decades and to help cater for this increase, ‘movable rails’ were introduced. The location of the movable rail can often affect the patters of racing and the design of the track. In Australia, horses that race away from the rail are often at an advantage.

The maintenance and wear and tear of a track can also lead to ‘track bias’. For example, back-markers are often favoured when the track is in poor condition, whereas conversely front-runners will be at an advantage immediately after track renovations are concluded.
